Graham Harris Photographer’s Retrospective

The TPS 115th anniversary celebrations got off to a
memorable start with a Photographer’s Perspective presented by Graham Harris
last night.

With a humorous, poignant and family-centred theme in
which featured shots taken by his father, and of his grandfather with kids in a
sulky, Graham soon had his audience engaged.

Graham surveyed his top 35 award winning images and his
batting average in national and international competitions.

He also included 14 images that didn’t do so well, and
the reasons why.

He then went into Lightroom with the raw files of some of
his top award winning shots, and showed some of the adjustments he made.

Most of Graham’s work concentrates on getting the image
right in camera, and to quote Graham, he “doesn’t do a lot of post-processing”.

Graham joined TPS in 2004 and has held several positions,
notably that of a long-serving vice-presidency, during which he introduced
MyPhotoclub to TPS.

President Tryg Helander presented Graham and family with
a weighty gift basket for his years of service.
Graham will continue being an active photographer and TPS member, but
recent illness forced him to relinquish formal positions in the club.

Nearly 100 images were submitted for the Image Challenge
“Weather”.

Next month the challenge is “Water”, so we look to seeing
many more images.   Members can submit up
to five Challenge images, five favourites and five from TPS field days – a
total of 15.

And as Graham pointed out, many of his top images came from TPS field days. Download presentation

Photographic Retrospective – Graham Harris, Skills Night Feb 25.

Graham Harris CF FAPS AFIAP GPU CR-2 QPSA PSQA will present
a retrospective on his photographic journey on the 25th February
2020.

Graham has been photographing since his early years growing
up on various properties throughout New South Wales.  He continued this passion in his working life
with the Department of Primary Industries in Queensland and with a young family
at Inglewood, Monto and Biloela.

In 2004 he joined the Toowoomba Photographic Society and
stared entering our local aggregate competition.  In 2007 he entered his first National
Photographic competition and 2009 started entering International Salons,
gaining some success with acceptances which has enabled him to obtain
photographic honours with the following organisations:

  • Australian Photographic Society (APS)
  • Federation Internationale de l’Art
    Photographique (FIAP)
  • Global Photographic Union (GPU)
  • Photographic Society of America (PSA)

In his presentation Graham will reflect on his photographic
journey and provide an overview of his experience with entering photos into
competition.  He will show examples of
his successful images, and also those that have not been as successful in
gaining acceptances.  He will demonstrate
the post-processing used to make the most of the images he captures and enters
into competition.

Alice Black February 2020

To perpetuate the memory of our late member Alice Black, the club has introduced the ‘Alice Black Memorial Trophy’ to be contested each year on a perpetual basis.

At each month’s Aggregate Competition the judge will select an image from all those entered as the monthly Alice Black Image – they will use their own criteria to select the image regardless of the score given.  All images submitted in the Aggregate Competition have the potential to become a possible winner of the Trophy as there is no restriction on the grade of the entrant or the medium in which the image is presented.

This month’s winner of the Alice Black award is Glen Innes sunset by Bruce Midkiff. This was entered in the B grade set subject section.

Graham Burstow new book launch next month.

Graham Burstow’s fourth book of his photographs, “Closer”, will be launched on Friday March 27.

TPS member and judge Gérard Saide
will speak at the launch to be held at Cobb and Co starting 6pm.

Graham’s latest work is a personal
survey of his 73 years in photography.

Comprising 142 A4 pages, “Closer” will be a must-have addition in the collection of photographers and anyone else with an artistic appreciation.

We all recognise Graham’s
‘Dorothea Lange’ shot on the cover, and I for one, can’t wait to get my hands
on a copy and see what’s inside.
