Alice Black winner April

Alice Black Memorial Trophy

To perpetuate the memory of our late member Alice Black, the club has introduced the ‘Alice Black Memorial Trophy’ to be contested each year on a perpetual basis.

At each month’s Aggregate Competition the judge will select an image from all those entered as the monthly Alice Black Image – they will use their own criteria to select the image regardless of the score given.  All images submitted in the Aggregate Competition have the potential to become a possible winner of the Trophy as there is no restriction on the grade of the entrant or the medium in which the image is presented.

As part of the “End of the Year” competition, the judge will choose the winning image from the twelve images chosen by the monthly judges.

This month’s winner is Dean Mengel for Bye, Bye Baby, Goodbye

Zoom club competition tonight.

Don’t forget judge Barry Whisson will present the April club competition results tonight starting 7pm. See earlier post for Zoom details. Margaret Kebble has kindly organised the Zoom meeting details and has done a test run with Barry.

Tonight entries close for the May competition “Self Portrait”. This will also be a remote judging, but details are yet to be decided.

Keep sending entries for the various Image Challenge topics as per usual. These can be sent ahead of time, but each month closes on the Friday before the scheduled Skills Night (4th Tuesday of the month).

April 14 judging by on line using Zoom

Hello TPS Members

Tuesday 14th Competition night has been scheduled as a ZOOM Meeting. The images will be presented by this message and Barry Whisson will be giving his judges comments on each image. The meeting will start at 7pm. The following is the official Zoom invite.

Margaret Kebble is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Topic: Margaret Kebble’s Zoom Meeting

Time: Apr 14, 2020 07:00 PM Brisbane

Join Zoom Meeting

https://us04web.zoom.us/j/449917114

Meeting ID: 449 917 114

Please note that all microphones will be muted by me so that Barry is able to give the comments without extra sound noise. We are usually limited to 40 minutes in a meeting but I had a message when I scheduled the meeting to say that the time restriction would be waved, so I am hoping that is true on the night. If we do get cut off at 40 minutes, I will reschedule the rest for Wednesday night. We will be commencing with B Grade. If necessary because of any time restriction we would do the A and Salon grades on the Wednesday but hopefully we will not have to do that.

April judging update

The judging of the April 14 competition has been completed and the results will be sent to members with the usual emails on that date.

REDACTED has collected the prints from judge Barry Whisson and these can be collected from 7 Crestview Crescent, Blue Mountain Heights by appointment. Sandra Neill is to return some packaging to my address, so if you provided prints in packaging that did not fit in the suitcase used for prints, you may wish to check first that I have it.

To make an appointment (do not just arrive without one) to collect your prints, please email rather than phone and I will put your prints in their packaging (if this exists) and place on a chair on my front verandah for collection.

Members will already know this is the last time we will handle prints until the crisis is over. Exceptions will be made for the two film photographers and people over 90 years of age.

A couple of observations.

This year has been exceptionally difficult for the TPS committee. Right from the beginning of January, well before the virus gained public attention, we have been met with extra-ordinary circumstances. The loss of a key individual with unique skills, displacement from our usual meeting venue, problems with last minute changes of judges, a higher than expected level of interaction with judges in carrying out of the judging process, major changes carried out to the website with reintroduction of additional categories, and failures/problems with the website, have all added to our administrative difficulties.

The administration of a community group of fewer than 100 members would not normally be expected to incur this level of workload.

How you can help.

Please take note of the most recent communications from us via the website and the Facebook group, if you use that medium. The quickest postings will be on FB, currently we have to enter information twice when using the website also.

Since the Covid-19 crisis hit, information and subsequent communications have moved rapidly, often with daily updates. This will make some previous information on the website out of date. Please don’t bother to point this out to me, I have no intention of going back and carefully checking each posting on this site to see if it still accurate. Similarly for the occasional grammatical error.

Regrettably I have to report we received a complaint from a neighbouring club regarding poor responses from judges generally including “two from Toowoomba”. I have had a similar experience. This is from before the virus. This reflects on all us. And please don’t tell me you have trouble keeping up with personal emails. Take some responsibility here, now is a good to time to learn new habits.

Saturday March 28 field day cancelled

Saturday field day cancelled.

Given the increasing restrictions on people movement and closure of many public indoor venues, it is evident there is no choice but to cancel this Saturday’s planned photoshoot at Toowoomba General Cemetery.

As soon as the infection rate curve falls rather than accelerates, and restrictions are lifted, we will again resume normal activities.

One idea is to start a series of Microskills sessions in the field.  We’ve covered a lot of topics at Jilly’s, which will provide excellent material.

Perhaps we’ll call them “Practice in the Paddock” sessions.

Important notice regarding competition entries and live judging.

The TPS management committee has been monitoring the Covid-19 virus outbreak on a daily basis.

As a consequence, it has been decided that no prints will be collected, given to judges, or handled during competitions until further notice (REDACTED will collect the April prints from Barry Whisson after completion and if the competitor is local, these may be collected from the KoolKat Quilting studio).

Print photographers who work from digital images will only be able to enter digital image categories. Print categories will not be judged.

We will make separate arrangements for our two film photographers in the interim, but their entries will be judged as digital images. We will instruct judges accordingly and ask them to be lenient if they notice such images (in terms of digital image quality).

The committee also believes the 4 square metre rule for social distancing in enclosed spaces is impractical, difficult to enforce, and a sizeable proportion of members will not be able to attend indoor meetings until the crisis is over.

This means we will not go ahead with the April competition night at De Molay House.

The Saturday March 28 field day at Toowoomba General Cemetery is under daily review and may be cancelled at any moment, especially if the Queensland government follows southern States in recently announced restrictions on movement and gathering of people even in outdoor locations.

Image challenge

Thank you everyone who submitted images for the March Image Challenge “Water”. We had 90 entries across the Image Challenge, Field Day and Favourites categories.

We will produce an a/v for each month as normal, and we will show these on the first occasion we are permitted to hold a Skills Night at De Molay House. Remember you can have 5 entries in the Image Challenge, 5 in Favourites and 5 in Field days totalling 15 images each month.

Image challenge is part of Skills Night on the 4th Tuesday of each month, and the closing date for images is 11pm on the Friday of the week before Skills Night.

Next month the theme is repetition. Already we have entries. Keep up the good work and your spirits in these trying times.

Saturday 28 field day.

Photo opportunity/field day.

A model I first met a while ago is looking for photo opportunities.  We’ve chosen the Toowoomba General  Cemetery meeting Saturday 28 at the front entrance at 4.30pm.  Bring  camera gear, flash and tripod.

We’ll experiment with slow shutter speed and a “ghost” moving behind the headstones, maybe even rear curtain flash, and whatever strikes our creative fancy.

It is an outdoor venue, we can easily maintain social distance, etc.  Don’t come if you are in the at risk categories of age, immunologically challenged, have cold/flu symptoms and so on.

If you are interested please let me know so I have some idea of numbers. $5 per person for the model please.

TPS meetings and corona virus

TPS and corona virus.

The TPS management committee discussed a range of matters last night including Covid 19 and potential impact on the club.  While secretary and GP Dr Jenny Graff said there were no confirmed cases in Toowoomba, the virus may already be here as there have been cases of people with the virus, but not showing symptoms.

Accordingly, we decided to hold Jilly’s tonight, but cease all other meetings until the April competition night. As the situation is constantly changing, we will revise our meeting dates as required.  As Tryg has reported being unwell, the topic will judging criteria for images and the feedback process from the club.

In the case of not being able to hold meetings, competitions and the image challenge can still go ahead as entries and judging can be done remotely.  This may have to be revised for prints, given the amount of handling involved, and whether or not businesses close, or individuals enter self-isolation.

Our planned field day at Downs Steam Rail on April 26 will be cancelled.  The viability of this event depended on selling tickets to photographers outside the region as well as to members.
