**IMPORTANT** Update to Aggregate Competitions
Hi All,
After feedback from a number of judges, the PSQ Judges Executive and Members, the committee have decided to bring our monthly aggregate competitions in line with other clubs in the state.
Each month, members will now be able to enter 2 images, down from the previous 3. This should bring our average monthly total images down to around 100 images total, down from 150. This will greatly reduce the load on judges each month.
NOTE: This change will commence from August (Set Subject of Water) onwards all competitions on MyPhotoClub have been updated.
You should still enter 3 images into July’s (Set Subject Bridges) competition.
This will also modify the scores required to move up a grade where eligible, the percentage of total score remains the same.
The maximum attainable points from competitions is now 174.
To move from B grade to A grade you must score over 55% of the maximum possible score, members will need to attain a score of 95 or above to move forward.
To move from A grade to Salon grade, you must score over 60% of the maximum possible score, members will need to attain a score of 104 or above to move forward.
Awards | Aggregate Points |
Honour | 6 |
Merit | 4 |
Highly Commended | 3 |
Commended | 2 |
Out of Category | 0 |
Alice Black | +2 ontop of the allocated score |
Members eligible for re-grading are advised prior to December, the start of the new competition year. The management committee makes the final decision on re-grading.
Changes to image dimensions and sizes:
The sizes of images that members can upload has been changed.
Dimensions: Ensure your image is at least 1500px on the long edge. There is no longer a maximum image dimension requirement.
File Size: Maximum of 5MB.
Some Do’s and Don’ts of Entering our Monthly competitions
To address some issues noted recently, we’ve put together some do’s and don’ts for entering our competitions:
- Do – enter your best work
- Do – familiarise yourself with the set subject and definitions (click here)
- Do – title your image appropriately so the judge understands your image
- Do – consider adding a small border to images with dark edges to help the judge identify where the image ends
- Do – Check you’ve entered into the right competition (print vs digital, open vs set subject)
- Don’t – include watermarks or signatures on images
- Don’t – use stock imagery, downloaded images or creative works from the internet, any works that have not been photographed by yourself or created with your own hand
Clarification of Creative Subject
Definition: Creative photography is the altering of reality
Explanation and Guidelines:
It is an extension of conventional photography into creative art, and its purpose is to take the image beyond the literal through the use of imaginative skill or originality of thought.
There should be a significant photographic content, and inclusion of mixed media of any kind (paint, transfer, digital etc) is welcome. It can be a collage or a montage. The final result must be all the photographer’s own work. This includes any tools used to alter the image that are not native to the software used, such as
- Extra brushes that add photographic elements such as snowflakes, raindrops, leaves etc
- Replacement pre-sets such as skies, sunsets, scenery
- Expansion packs
If you use image manipulation software you can
- Combine two images then experiment with different blending modes and opacity
- Experiment with the inbuilt tools such as colour replacement, invert, free transform, perspective warp, puppet warp, liquefy
- Create your own backgrounds by photographing interesting textures, skies, sunsets and scenery
If you are not using image manipulation software there are many other ways of being creative, such as
- Using in camera effects such as zoom pull, multiple exposures, intentional camera movement
- Cutting and pasting of printed images to make collages and montages
- Painting on prints or hand colouring
Creative does NOT mean abstract.
If there are any concerns regarding these changes, please contact the committee via email committee@tpsi.org.au

Skills Night / Field Day TONIGHT
At this stage, tonight’s Skills night is still on.
Please share this with members without email or internet access.
We will NOT be meeting at DeMolay tonight
We will be having a combined skills night / field day this coming Tuesday Night.
We are going to meet at the rail bridge in town that is at the corner of Bashford and Long Street.
Details:
Where: Rail bridge Cnr Bashford and Long Street (Across from the driving range)
Parking: Parking available in Water Street
When: 7PM
Plan: The general idea is to use this old wooden rail bridge as a subject interest to practice photographing bridges with, Try and get them level, perspective right, depth of field. We will probably light paint the bridge depending on what the ambient light will be like at the time. Vehicles will drive past so there will be a chance to get light trails, we “might” even get a train.
You might have an opportunity to photograph people at the driving range.
There might be running water in the creek underneath
What to bring:
Camera, batteries, memory cards.
Lenses: Wide will probably be best (generally anything under 24mm on a Full Frame), however longer lenses will work too and will give a different effect.
Accessories:
Tripod, Shutter Cable Release (helpful b ut not required), a torch / LED panel or something that can be used to light paint with.
Jumper/s – it might be cold
Warm Drink if you’re that way inclined.
Umbrella – Given the weather lately it’s almost necessary everywhere.

ZOOM TONIGHT @ 7PM Image Review & “Bridges” Set Subject Talk
Tonight we have our second image review night for members to get additional feedback on their images. At the start of the meeting we will ask for volunteers and then prepare the images.
If you would like to get some feedback on images you may be thinking of entering for future judging’s, please submit them in the “Critique Corner” which you can find here:
https://toowoomba.myphotoclub.com.au/enter-a-collection/?collection_id=1315
After the image review section John Stewart will go through a short presentation he’s put together for our next set subject “Bridges”.
Set Subject Defined as:
A bridge is a structure built to span a physical obstacle (such as a body of water, valley, road, or rail) without blocking the way underneath. It is constructed for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle, which is usually something that is otherwise difficult or impossible to cross. There are many different designs of bridges, each serving a particular purpose and applicable to different situations. Designs of bridges vary depending on factors such as: the function of the bridge, the nature of the terrain where the bridge is constructed and anchored, and the material used to make it and the funds available to build it. The earliest bridges were likely made with fallen trees and stepping stones.

REMINDER: Images for Trans-Tasman Comp are due tonight also for “Nature”.
https://toowoomba.myphotoclub.com.au/enter-a-collection/?collection_id=3198
Please ensure your images are uploaded by 11:59PM.
Clarification of Nature for TransTasman
We have clarified with the Howick club what definition we will be using of Nature for the TransTasman which will be posted shortly. The competition has been extended a week to accommodate should you find your images no longer fit. Images must be captured from 1st of April to the 8th of May. The competition on MyPhotoClub will close on the 10th of may giving you two days to upload your images. The judging night will then be on the 25th of May.
Clarified Definition: To come up with a definition of ‘Nature’ is much the same as ‘how long is a piece of string’. The following is straight from the PSNZ rules.
NATURE
Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archaeology, in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality. Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral parts of the nature story such as nature subjects – such as barn owls or storks – adapted to an environment modified by humans, or where those human elements are in situations depicting natural forces, such as hurricanes or tidal waves. Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals are allowed.Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens are NOT eligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement. No techniques that add, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are allowed. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content, or without altering the content of the original scene, are allowed, including HDR, focus stacking and dodging/burning.Techniques that remove elements added by the camera, such as dust spots, digital noise and film scratches, are allowed. Stitched images are not allowed. All allowed adjustments must appear natural. Colour images can be converted to grey-scale monochrome. Infrared images, either direct-captures or derivations, are NOT allowed.Images entered in Nature sections meeting the Nature Photography Definition above may have landscapes, geologic formations, weather phenomena and extant organisms as the primary subject matter. This includes images taken with the subjects in controlled conditions, such as zoos, game farms, botanical gardens, aquariums and any enclosure where the subjects are totally dependent on man for food.Only scientific names, common names or descriptive titles shall be used. The essence here is in the words of ‘human created’ and ‘cultivated’ as NOT being acceptable. For us, particularly in our TransTasman competition, we can be a little bit more flexible. The question then becomes ‘how far is too far?’
RECOMMENDATION:
Using the PSNZ description above as a basis, make sure that the ‘point of focus’ in your image is NOT cultivated or man made even if they are present.Taking matters further, particularly with flowers, most ‘garden’ varieties have been genetically ‘managed’ by mankind and hence do not meet the requirements. Having said that, there are numerous ‘wild’ flowers that do meet the criteria.ExampleIf you take an image of a bee or butterfly on a Rose, does this meet the requirements?
- If the bee or butterfly is the main focus, within the image, then yes.
- If the Rose appears more prominent than the bee or butterfly, then no.
