Graham Burstow Award 2024

At each month’s Aggregate Competition the judge will select a monochrome image of the month from the awards of those entered as the monthly Graham Burstow Image.  The award is in memory of Graham Burstow OAM – he was a founding member of the Australian Photographic Society, a member the Toowoomba Photographic Society since the 1950s and was our patron until his passing in August 2022. Graham focused on social documentary photography and monochrome prints. The annual Graham Burstow Award will be selected from the monthly winners at our End of Year Competition in December 2024.

All images submitted in the Aggregate Competition have the potential to become a possible winner of the Trophy as there is no restriction on the grade of the entrant or the medium in which the image is presented. The Graham Burstow image chosen each month receives an additional 2 points to the points already awarded.

These can be awarded from ANY grade of ANY score, it does not necessarily have to be the “highest awarded” image.

In 2024 there have been three Graham Burstow Awards – each of these are provided below to acknowledge the monthly award winners to date.

‘Tawhai Falls’ by Andrew Raguse
‘Lake Mulwalla’ by Pete McDonald
‘Good Advice’ by Sandy Adsett

Congratulations to each of these monthly Graham Burstow Award winners who are now in the running for the 2024 Graham Burstow Award.

Takatsuki Exhibition Image Call

Takatsuki International Association (TIA) on behalf of the Koeisha Photographic Society have invited the Toowoomba Photographic Society to provide 5 images for their annual International Photo Exhibition 2024 to be held from the 6 – 11 June 2024.  Ideally images showcasing the Toowoomba Region and culture are preferred.

Members can submit up to two images for consideration for the five entries sought – the final five will be selected by the TPS Committee. The images should be up to 5Mb in size and be no more than 1920 pixels on the horizontal and 1080 pixel on the vertical. They can be submitted through MyPhotoClub by clicking on the Takatsuki International Exhibition button. Entries must be submitted by midnight on Friday 29 March 2024. The five images selected will be printed by the Toowoomba Regional Council for submission to the exhibition.

TIA have have advised that this year will be the last year that the Koeisha Photographic Society will be holding the International Photo Exhibition. The Koeisha have an aging and decreasing membership and therefore they are unable to continue holding the event.  The Koeisha Photographic Society will be still continuing as a club but just unable to continue the event.

Judging Comments – John Blessas

John Blessas who judged our March Aggregate Competition was unable to present his image assessments owing to work commitments – he had a 2am start the following morning. He has provided the following information for members explaining his judging process.

“I found the standard to be quite high.

The primary factor in looking at all images is emotion.
How does the image generate feeling (good or bad)?
Have I felt a sense of a feeling, story, place or other emotion?

Technical merit is considered, but only as to how it helps with the emotion/story/etc of the image. I believe an image does not have to be razor sharp, on the thirds, etc to tell its story.

I do use the” Three Images” test for deciding grades.
If this was one of three images on a wall, what would make me come back to that image?

All comments are made with the consideration that if it was me submitting my images for critiquing;

“What would I be happy to have a judge say about my images (good or bad) and how I could possibly improve them?”

As I do not know the level of the photographer, how much post processing was done, etc. my comments are made with the best intent to help the maker of the image.

Travel and workshop images. These can compete with each other. When you see a similar image come up it will be subconsciously compared to the first image. It helps if only one image from a trip is entered to keep the wow factor alive.

Personal emotion. We all have favourite images and family images. These shine in our eyes. But how will someone else with no emotional attachment see them?

All advice is given for use with Photoshop and initial adjustments in Photoshop Camera RAW. I use and recommend third party software from Topaz and NIK. A very useful add on I use is the free “A Touch of Light and Touch of Darkness” from MCP Software.

All images were judged in simular light conditions and normal resolution. No images were greatly “blown up” or “pixel peeped” during judging.

Again, thank you for this opportunity.

I am quite happy to answer questions if members want further comments.”
