Alice Black Award – May 2019 – “The Star” by Iris Castle
To perpetuate the memory of our late member Alice Black, the club has introduced the ‘Alice Black Memorial Trophy’ to be contested each year on a perpetual basis.
At each month’s Aggregate Competition the judge will select an image from all those entered as the monthly Alice Black Image – they will use their own criteria to select the image regardless of the score given. All images submitted in the Aggregate Competition have the potential to become a possible winner of the Trophy as there is no restriction on the grade of the entrant or the medium in which the image is presented.
For May 2019 the Alice Black has been awarded to Iris Castle for her image “The Star”. This image was entered in the B Grade Digital Colour Set Subject section – “Bokeh”.
Our judge, Gerard Saide provided the following comments “A perfect bokeh background. Lighting is beautiful. A less central placement of the bird might be more effective but not always so.”

Alice Black Award – April 2019 – “Above normal” by Graham Burstow
To perpetuate the memory of our late member Alice Black, the club has introduced the ‘Alice Black Memorial Trophy’ to be contested each year on a perpetual basis.
At each month’s Aggregate Competition the judge will select an image from all those entered as the monthly Alice Black Image – they will use their own criteria to select the image regardless of the score given. All images submitted in the Aggregate Competition have the potential to become a possible winner of the Trophy as there is no restriction on the grade of the entrant or the medium in which the image is presented.
For April 2019 the Alice Black has been awarded to Graham Burstow for his print “Above Normal”. This image was entered in the Salon Grade Print Mono Set Subject section.
Our judge, Wendy Geddes provided the following comments “There are so many wonderfully correct things about this image that I fear if I start, it might be the longest critique I’ve done. The child knows he’s unwell and he dreads what the thermometer might tell and Mum’s expression shows concern. The story is perfectly represented by composition and technique. I really enjoyed the little flick of Rembrandt lighting on both models shaded cheeks, the perfect sepia tones, the theatre of the positioning and prop, and the subtle separation of child’s world and adult’s world through the depth of field. The last point is an echo from the past, when a parent was in charge and took the necessary action, without graphically illuminating the situation to the child, as in modern times. I also enjoyed your title, which cryptically alludes to the situation without literally, spelling it out. I could go on. Thank you for entering this image. “
