Future Competition Night Changes
The TPS Committee met on Wednesday 20 March 2024 and made several changes/additions to the regular monthly Aggregate Competition held on the second Tuesday of each month.
From our April 2024 Aggregate Competition meeting all digital entries for competition must comply with the following dimensions/size:
- must be equal to or less than 1920 pixels on the horizontal side (the long edge of a landscape orientated image)
- must be equal to or less than 1080 pixels on the vertical side (the long side of a portrait orientated image)
- must be equal to or less than 5 Mb in size
This complies with the standard image sizes entered into International competitions and brings our requirements in line with these competitions. Instructions on sizing your images will be uploaded to the MyPhotoClub website and a demonstration will be given at the Zoom meeting on Tuesday 26 March 2024 (details to be provided in a future post).
At our April 2024 Aggregate Competition night (and at following ones) we are intending to hold two 10 minute “Meet the Member” sessions. This will be an opportunity for members to show 5 of their images and speak to them – for example why and how the images were made. The Committee felt this was a good way for members to know a little more about each other and our work. We are seeking volunteers for these sessions so please e-mail the President at president@tpsi.org.au if you wish to be one of our future presenters.
From the May 2024 Aggregate Competition night there will be a slideshow presentation during the supper break of images submitted by members that are not judged or commented on. All members have the opportunity to submit up to 2 digital images each month into the monthly Non-Judged Entries section within MyPhotoClub. This is an ideal opportunity for you to show and see your work up on the big screen – all images will be displayed with title and image makers name. We are keen for members who do not normally enter our competitions to submit their entries for this slideshow – the closing date and time is the same as that for our Aggregate Competition – by midnight on the Tuesday night of the competition the month before they are shown. The entries for the May 2024 non-judged section are thus due by midnight on the 10 April 2024. Thus all members will be able to enter up to 4 images per month – two for competition and two for the non-judged section slideshow.
If you have any questions in relation to these changes please e-mail the Committee at committee@tpsi.org.au.

Takatsuki Exhibition Image Call
Takatsuki International Association (TIA) on behalf of the Koeisha Photographic Society have invited the Toowoomba Photographic Society to provide 5 images for their annual International Photo Exhibition 2024 to be held from the 6 – 11 June 2024. Ideally images showcasing the Toowoomba Region and culture are preferred.
Members can submit up to two images for consideration for the five entries sought – the final five will be selected by the TPS Committee. The images should be up to 5Mb in size and be no more than 1920 pixels on the horizontal and 1080 pixel on the vertical. They can be submitted through MyPhotoClub by clicking on the Takatsuki International Exhibition button. Entries must be submitted by midnight on Friday 29 March 2024. The five images selected will be printed by the Toowoomba Regional Council for submission to the exhibition.
TIA have have advised that this year will be the last year that the Koeisha Photographic Society will be holding the International Photo Exhibition. The Koeisha have an aging and decreasing membership and therefore they are unable to continue holding the event. The Koeisha Photographic Society will be still continuing as a club but just unable to continue the event.

Judging Comments – John Blessas
John Blessas who judged our March Aggregate Competition was unable to present his image assessments owing to work commitments – he had a 2am start the following morning. He has provided the following information for members explaining his judging process.
“I found the standard to be quite high.
The primary factor in looking at all images is emotion.
How does the image generate feeling (good or bad)?
Have I felt a sense of a feeling, story, place or other emotion?
Technical merit is considered, but only as to how it helps with the emotion/story/etc of the image. I believe an image does not have to be razor sharp, on the thirds, etc to tell its story.
I do use the” Three Images” test for deciding grades.
If this was one of three images on a wall, what would make me come back to that image?
All comments are made with the consideration that if it was me submitting my images for critiquing;
“What would I be happy to have a judge say about my images (good or bad) and how I could possibly improve them?”
As I do not know the level of the photographer, how much post processing was done, etc. my comments are made with the best intent to help the maker of the image.
Travel and workshop images. These can compete with each other. When you see a similar image come up it will be subconsciously compared to the first image. It helps if only one image from a trip is entered to keep the wow factor alive.
Personal emotion. We all have favourite images and family images. These shine in our eyes. But how will someone else with no emotional attachment see them?
All advice is given for use with Photoshop and initial adjustments in Photoshop Camera RAW. I use and recommend third party software from Topaz and NIK. A very useful add on I use is the free “A Touch of Light and Touch of Darkness” from MCP Software.
All images were judged in simular light conditions and normal resolution. No images were greatly “blown up” or “pixel peeped” during judging.
Again, thank you for this opportunity.
I am quite happy to answer questions if members want further comments.”

Alice Black – December 2019 – “Brollies” by Pierre Boudib
To perpetuate the memory of our late member Alice Black, the club has introduced the ‘Alice Black Memorial Trophy’ to be contested each year on a perpetual basis.
At each month’s Aggregate Competition the judge will select an image from all those entered as the monthly Alice Black Image – they will use their own criteria to select the image regardless of the score given. All images submitted in the Aggregate Competition have the potential to become a possible winner of the Trophy as there is no restriction on the grade of the entrant or the medium in which the image is presented.
For December 2019 the Alice Black has been awarded to Pierre Boudib for his image “Brollies”. This image was entered in the A Grade Open Digital section.

TPS Club Meeting – 10 December 2019
Our next club meeting is at 7:00pm on Tuesday, 10th December 2019. This month the Set Subject is “Rust”. We have had 116 images submitted this month. The images will be judged using our club members panel system.
We look forward to catching up with you all this evening.
The December 2019 Cable Release can now be downloaded by clicking on the download button:
And don’t forget that entries for the January 2020 (the first month of our 2020 Aggregate competition competition) must be uploaded by 11:59pm on the 10th December 2019. The Set Subject for this month is “Abstract”. The guideline for this competition is “Abstract photography is the expression of ideas and emotions by using elements such as colours, lines, shapes and textures without attempting to create a realistic picture – any subject, no matter how ordinary, can become abstract depending on the way it is photographed.
More often than not what you leave out is just as important as what you leave in.
There are no rules about composition or framing – it all comes down to you, your view and what you find interesting or beautiful – you are only limited by your vision and ideas.
Ways to get started:
- Choose strong shapes
- Get up close
- Use colour to grab attention
- Seek out texture
- Look for repeating patterns
- Use lines and curves
- Photograph reflections
- Shoot through another object
- Capture shadow
- Blur your images
Our judge for the January 2020 competition is Michael Stefanini AAPS PSQA.
